In Harrison Bergeron, Kurt Vonnegut uses humor and irony to demonstrate how corrupt this utopian society is and why we should never try to create anything like it. George is the antagonist in this story because he is a firm believer in the system and defends it on multiple occasions such as when he says “If I tried to get away with it, then other people’d get away with it and pretty soon we’d be right back to the dark ages again” (Vonnegut 1180). On the other hand, the other characters in the story show other views on the subject. Harrison is an example of the people who will stand up against this change and oppose it. The story focuses on Harrison Bergeron the main character throughout the short story and paints him as the saving grace in this new hostile world they are living in. Harrison Bergeron shows that in the quest for equality many of the small things that make each human different and unique are destroyed. Harrison Bergeron is a warning to modern-day society about the problem with the quest for equality.
